Basic Open Position
Guitar Chords - Dm & F
By Shawn Bradshaw

The Dm and F chords have gotten the bad rep for being the "hard" basic guitar chords. Therefore they were not included in the first basic guitar chords lesson. This does not mean that they are second class guitar chord citizens ...but you are more likely to find the other 7 chords more often (in the most basic rock and folk tunes). Don't forsake your Dm and F chords, they will serve you well.

Dm guitar chord using 3th finger

The Dm chord has 2 commonly used fingerings. Although there are plenty of guitar players that play this chord with the 3rd finger (red fingering), here are a couple of reasons that I suggest using the 4th finger instead (black fingering).

  1. There is only one ligament that connects your 2nd and 3rd finger. Therefore stretching between these fingers not only is more difficult, but puts extra stress on your hand.
  2. There are times when you are going to use your 3rd finger to play other notes in the context of a Dm chord, like the chords below.
