Whether you are a Guns n' Roses fan or not, there
is no denying lead guitarist Slash's taste and feel on the guitar.
This lick is from the intro solo in "Patience". Though
this lick was pulled from that particular solo, you can hear this
same lick played by hundreds of guitar players. You will hear
BB King, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, etc.. play this one. So you
could call it a cliché. But it is a great lick non the
less. The Guns n' Roses song is actually tuned down a half step,
but I have recorded the example in standard tuning.

The red number
is the note that you should use as your guide. In this case the
red note is a G. The lick is in G major.
This lick comes mostly out of a G major pentatonic
scale in the 7th position. You are just adding some chromatic
notes to fill in a little. The first bent note, and the 1st note
that you play on the 1st string are really the same note. So you
are bending to a note that is in the scale.

This lick can easily be used over any major chord. All you have
to do is move this lick up and down the neck, using the note in
red as your guide. So to play this over an F chord, just move
2 frets lower on the neck.
A couple of other scales in the area that you should be aware
of are the G major, and the G mixolydian mode. Using these scales
takes a little more knowledge of theory, but they are both scales
that can be used in conjunction with this lick at different times.
