Funky Octaves

It is also very common in a groove to just use octaves. Here are 2 octave shapes to get under control for your initial funk endeavors.

Make sure that your 1st finger touches the 4th string and the 2nd string. This will give you a more percussive sound, and avoid any unwanted strings from ringing.
